What is BodyPump?

Our BodyPump in Morley, Baldivis and Southern River is a full barbell workout set to music that’s designed to help you burn fat, gain strength and have a great time!

It uses light weights and high repetition movements to tone your entire body, increasing your core strength and improving bone health.

What it’s based on

BodyPump is based on the Rep Effect, a well known formula that focuses on creating lean athletic muscle by using light weights over high numbers of repetitions until failure (exhaustion). The theory behind it is that by exhausting your muscles, you don’t get bulked up, but gain strength and muscle tone instead.

What it involves

During a BodyPump class, you would normally graduate through five or six different exercises, performed in different combinations to complete a total of around 800 to 1000 reps in the course of a 60-minute session.

These exercises would include Chest Presses, Squats, Deadrows, Clean and Presses, Lunges and Reverse Curls and to complete at least 800 reps, each of these exercises would need to be performed 133 times.

Those starting out or trying to get in shape would obviously begin with much less than this, only performing three or four tracks and working their way gradually up to 800 reps over a number of sessions under the guidance of their instructor.

Music plays a big role in BodyPump and each exercise is done to a particular song or music track, with the tempo increasing over the course of the workout. Your instructor also provides encouragement and motivation while you exercise, helping everyone to dig deep and get the most out of the class. They will also guide you about the right weight to lift with each track, based on their knowledge of the movements and the difficulty of the exercise.

BodyPump classes are either 30, 45, or 60 minutes long and you can expect to burn an average of 540 calories in a 60 minute session. For best results, we recommend you take at least two BodyPump classes a week in conjunction with other cardio exercise.

The benefits of BodyPump

BodyPump has a range of benefits for those wanting a great cardio workout;

  • It’s suitable for both beginners and pros – because the weight of the barbell can be increased gradually, BodyPump is an ideal workout for everyone regardless of age, experience or level of fitness.
  • You don’t need a lot of coordination – thanks to its simple movement patterns and exercises for the entire body, it’s a workout anyone can perform.
  • It’s one of the best ways to get fit – the multi-joint movements used in BodyPump such as cleans, deadlifts and squats work more muscles in less time, unlike single joint exercises such as bicep curls or extensions which are slow to build muscle.
  • It’s just plain fun – exercising to great music and achieving your goals along with a group of like-minded people is a fun and rewarding way to work out.
