What is Metafit?

Metafit is a popular workout that combines bodyweight training (exercise that uses your own weight as resistance) with bursts of high intensity cardio (HIIT). Not only will it boost your metabolism and rapidly burn fat, but it’s also a fast workout that can be done anywhere and without the need for any equipment.

A move away from the usual dance and choreography based gym classes towards a more extreme approach to exercise, Metafit actually achieves better results in less time than normal aerobic exercise. We offer MetaFIT workouts in Morley, Baldivis and Southern River.

What it’s based on

Metafit is the brainchild of a former UK Royal Marine commando and national gymnast and it’s based on High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and Tabata techniques.

High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is a well known strategy that advocates alternating short periods of intense anaerobic exercise with less intense recovery periods. Tabata is a Japanese inspired training method that espouses short intense workouts over longer more moderate ones.

Working on the theory that the majority of calories are burned while resting, Metafit combines HIIT and Tabata principles and then goes one step further by increasing the length of the resting periods, thereby increasing the resting metabolic rate.

Metafit is also based on Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption (EPOC), the scientific principle that calories will continue to be burned long after the exercise session has finished.

What it involves

A typical Metafit class will begin with a short warm up,  just as in any exercise class and will then launch straight into short, high intensity intervals involving movements such as push-ups, planks, squats and burpees.

The number of reps will depend on the exercise, but in a typical 20 minute session, you can expect to spend 30 seconds on, followed by 60 seconds off; which might seem like an extraordinarily long rest period, but which Metafit considers vital for renewing oxygen and glycogen levels and avoiding the breaking down of muscle tissue.
