What is Super Seniors?

Super Seniors fitness classes is a Bailey Fitness exercise program designed specifically for those over 55 years of age. It focuses on improving strength and flexibility and maintaining fitness and it’s suitable for everyone over 55, regardless of their fitness level.

What it’s based on

There’s plenty of evidence to show that regular exercise for seniors offers great benefits including extending our lifespan. For instance, a study by the Lifestyle Interventions and Independence for Elders (LIFE) found that a trial group of seniors aged between 70 and 89 who took up walking, strength and balance exercises were 28% less likely to become disabled.

But despite evidence such as this, only a small proportion of seniors exercise on a regular basis; something we hope to change with our Super Seniors program. Exercise doesn’t need to be strenuous to be effective. Moderate exercise done regularly can also have lots of health benefits and that’s what we aim to deliver in our 45 minute Super Seniors classes..

What it involves

You should always talk to your doctor before starting an exercise program and once you do, you should ease yourself into it to give your body time to adjust.

Our Super Seniors classes will provide a well-rounded introduction to a range of different exercises designed to encourage strength, balance, endurance and flexibility.

You’ll perform moderate intensity exercises such as walking, exercising with weights, using resistance bands, stretching and balancing and all in  a fun, friendly class amongst like minded people.

The benefits of Super Seniors

There is a big range of benefits to be had from exercising in your senior years including;

  • Improved cardiovascular health – regular cardio exercise lowers your risk of stroke, heart attack and heart disease and can also help to keep your cholesterol and blood pressure down.
  • Stronger bones – exercise such as strength training helps to prevent loss of bone mass, reducing your risk of osteoporosis.
  • Emotional health – exercise helps reduce anxiety and depression and can improve your mood and increase your feelings of well-being.
  • Healthier joints – exercise can help prevent joint swelling and reduce the pain caused by arthritis.
  • Stronger immune system – those who exercise regularly tend to recover faster from injury, illness and surgical procedures.
  • Longer lifespan – regular exercise can increase your lifespan by around three to five years.
  • Fewer falls – exercise can strengthen muscles and improve balance and bone density, reducing the risk of falls and broken bones.
  • Reduced risk of dementia – those who don’t exercise are more likely to develop dementia than those who do.
  • Disease prevention – exercise is an effective remedy for a number of chronic conditions.

Some seniors think they’re too old to exercise, but it’s never too late to start and as we’ve shown, taking up exercise at any age can have lots of great benefits.
