Boredom Busters To Improve Your Exercise Routine

Let’s face it…. Exercise can become a bit monotonous if you only do the same thing week in, week out. Pounding the treadmill road or cycling to nowhere may well be burning the calories, but jeez it’s dull.

What you need is a little spice and innovation. Not only does this keep things interesting, it actually improves your results through challenging different muscles and cardiovascular effort. Check out the following boredom busters to ensure your regime remains fresh as a daisy every time you lace up your trainers…

  1. Do something completely different: Exercise is only an effort if it’s not fun. Remember when you were a kid and got to learn an awesome new skill? Well, it’s time to relive your childhood. Never ridden a horse? Maybe it’s time you learned. How about joining a team sport, such as football, hockey, ultimate frisbee or anything that tickles your fancy. And if you’ve not yet discovered the joy of the classic Aussie pastime of surfing then what are you waiting for? It’s not only a sport for bleached blonde surf dudes, you know – there’s plenty of newbies of all ages taking the plunge – so grab your swimmers and embrace the call of the ocean.  It doesn’t matter what sport you decide to explore. The point is, delving into a new sport is an incredible way to up your fitness game, not to mention being great for motivation.
  2. Sharing is caring: Working out with friends can be far more enjoyable than solo fitness. Whether it’s a run around the block, classes or full on team efforts, it’s the perfect way to boost morale and up the ante.
  3. Get competitive: Download an app and compete against others. There’s something strangely addictive about trying to beat others in your exercise endeavours, even if you aren’t in physical contact. Trying to move up the leader board is sure to encourage you to get out there and attempt to improve your position.
  4. Set treats as goals: Tell yourself that, for example, when you complete a 7 workout week (insert your target of choice) that you can indulge in whatever it is you fancy. Not food (that kinda defeats the object), but something that you consider a luxury. Maybe treat yourself to a massage, a shopping spree or anything of your choosing that’ll provide inspiration.
  5. Get down and boogie: Don’t work out to music? It’s about time you started. A storming fitness track is just what you need to work a little harder for a little longer, simply because you’re into the beat and don’t want the track to end.
  6. Rope in a canine companion. Hitch up the dog and let him or her lead the way. Many a keen Canicross fan started this way. Plus running with your hound is a great way to multi-task exercise and the daily dog walk.
  7. Get the Strictly bug: Ballroom dancing is in – in a huge way! Unleash your inner diva and learn to tango, salsa, foxtrot and rhumba your way to fitness.

Quite simply, the way to prevent exercise becoming a chore is to mix it up. Not only does this keep your brain interested, but your muscles as well. Our bodies soon become used to the same-old same-old. One of the most powerful things we can do to increase our fitness is to challenge ourselves to do something different every time we workout.
