Maintaining Your Fitness Over the Festive Period: Don’t stop now

December is fast approaching and with it the annual temptations of food, alcohol and the distinct possibility of less exercise. We’ve put together some top tips to help maintain your fitness over the next few weeks, so warding off the January blues when you try to squeeze back into your work clothes…

Mix and Match, Spice It Up and Plan Ahead

You put mucho effort into getting and staying fit. The following are ways to ensure your efforts aren’t scuppered as you prepare to party your way through a month of festivities.

  1. Get exercise done early: Invites often pop up unexpectedly during December. Rather than missing out on your workout, swap your regime and get active earlier in the day. That way you won’t feel doubly guilty as you indulge in the odd mince pie (or glass of your fav tipple) when you’d normally be working out.
  2. Make workouts festive: We often exercise to music, so why not put together a festive training playlist? That way you incorporate the season into your workouts. This, combined with the rush of endorphins post-effort, will have you buzzing your way through the month.
  3. Alternate: So the gym routine doesn’t work, perhaps due to closures, family commitments or another reason? Then hit the streets, hills, or countryside for a hike, beg or borrow a bike and get out into the fresh air, go dancing (a perfect festive choice) and enjoy the vibe while burning calories.
  4. Try something new: As the saying goes, a change is as good as a rest. When you’re feeling a little demotivated there’s nothing better at encouraging you to exercise than doing something different. Embrace your inner diva by learning ballroom, massage your inner calm with tai chi or go country and learn to ride a horse. It doesn’t matter what you learn, it’s all about keeping active and adding a new facet to your active life.
  5. Sign up for some personal training sessions: There’s nothing more powerful than a one-on-one focus on your fitness efforts. Plus, if you’re money-driven, the fact that you’ve spent some hard-earned dollars on your workouts can prove highly persuasive when you’d rather veg on the sofa and binge watch reruns of old Christmas specials.
  6. Don’t feel guilty; After all, it’s party season! So get out there and enjoy. If you have the odd cheat day then that’s OK. Just be a little stricter on the following and you’ll overcome any negative effects. The problems arise when you let those days become the norm, rather than the exception. If you’re concerned that this might be the case, then find a kindred spirit (or join a group) and head out for a walk/run/class (insert appropriate activity) in good company.
